Wedding Color Palettes: How to Choose a Romantic, Cohesive Color Story for Your Wedding

Your wedding color palette is one of the very first decisions you’ll make—and one of the most important.

It’s more than just choosing “colors you like.”
Your palette sets the tone for your entire wedding day…
from the invitations your guests receive in the mail
to the flowers, linens, dresses, and every layered detail in between.

The most beautiful weddings aren’t built around just two colors.
They’re designed with a thoughtful mix of tones—soft, rich, and neutral—that create depth, movement, and a feeling your guests will remember.

If you’re not sure where to begin, this guide will walk you through how to choose your palette, plus a few of our most-loved wedding color directions.

How to Choose Your Wedding Color Palette

Before choosing specific colors, start with the bigger picture:

  • Your venue and setting
  • Your season
  • The natural landscape around you
  • Flowers that are in season

From there, we recommend choosing 3–5 colors, not just one or two.

A simple formula we often use when designing for our couples:

  • 60% neutral (ivory, champagne, soft white, taupe)
  • 30% main color
  • 10% accent color for depth

This creates a palette that feels layered, intentional, and elevated. Not flat or overly matched.

Our Signature Wedding Color Palette Ideas

Here are a few timeless and romantic palette directions we design with often. Each one can be adapted to your season, setting, and personal style.

Dusty blue and white is a dreamy and elegant way to represent your wedding with flowers. Delphinium, hydrangea, and tweedia, paired with garden roses and ranunculus are our favorites to add to floral arrangements.

Your Color Palette Should Flow Through Everything

Your palette isn’t just for your flowers—it should carry through your entire wedding day.

Think:

  • Save the dates and invitations
  • Envelope liners and paper details
  • Bridesmaid dresses and accessories
  • Linens, candles, and tabletop design
  • Floral arrangements and installations

When your colors are thoughtfully repeated throughout these elements, your wedding feels cohesive, intentional, and beautifully designed.
